Frequently Asked Questions.
About the farm
What is regenerative farming?
In a nutshell, regenerative farming is a more holistic approach to agriculture that results in healthier soil, crops, and ecosystems. Our approach includes cover crops, pollinator habitat, diverse crop rotations, armoring the soil, limiting soil disturbance, composting, and integrating animals.
What does Soil and Climate Health Initiative Verified mean?
This our third-party regenerative verification. Via this certification, our farm and brand makes commitments, targets, and plans to help scale regenerative agriculture. This third party not only verifies our holistic and regenerative farm practices, but also verifies that the outcomes are in fact regenerating soil and ecosystem health. Various metrics are analyzed, recorded, and verified such as organic matter, water infiltration rates, soil compaction, earthworm counts, microbiology presence, carbon content, wildlife counts, soil aggregation, plant health, and water usage.
Are your potatoes organic?
We have farmland that is both certified organic and not certified organic. We process both organic potatoes and non-organic potatoes. Our products are not labeled or certified organic. But all of our potatoes, whether grown on organic farmland or not, are not sprayed with synthetic pesticides (herbicides, fungicides, insecticides).
Are your potatoes free from pesticides?
All of our potatoes, whether grown on organic farmland or not, are not sprayed with synthetic pesticides (herbicides, fungicides, insecticides). You are getting some of the cleanest potatoes possible in each bag of chips.
How else are you sustainable?
We care greatly for the earth and are grateful for the stewardship that we have. Let us tell you a few things that set us apart.
Regenerative, holistic farming.
Plastic neutral company.
Conserving resources such as saving tens of thousands of gallons of water per acre of regenerative potatoes.
Using skin on potatoes thereby reducing food waste.
Using recycled content in boxes and some other packaging.
About our potato chips
What certifications do your chips carry?
All our chips are certified regenerative, glyphosate-free, non-gmo, gluten-free, and plastic neutral.
Do you use any artificial ingredients?
No! We have worked very hard to develop flavor combinations that contain no artificial ingredients. We use only natural and simple ingredients in all of our chip options.
Do your chips contain any allergens?
Our chips flavors are free from all 9 major allergens - wheat, peanuts, tree nuts, shellfish, fish, eggs, milk, sesame, and soybeans. Our chip facility is an allergen free facility, dedicated to only producing Roots Chips. To see exact ingredients, see individual chip flavor pages on our website.
Why avocado oil?
To make Roots Chips, we use 100% avocado oil. Avocado oil has a higher smoke point than other cooking oil, it can safely be heated to a high temperature without oxidation occurring and free radicals being created. It is rich in antioxidants like lutein. It is high in monounsaturated fats, contains saturated fats, and is low in polyunsaturated fats. Avocado oil also has a mild taste. It contains vitamin E and like other fats, it helps the body absorb fat-soluble vitamins. This makes it a great combo with nutrient rich potatoes!
How can you be sure your avocado oil is 100% avocado oil?
On occasion, there may be concerns regarding adulteration with any high value oil such as avocado oil or olive oil. This is generally from a non-traceable and non-verified source.
This is where our commitment to authenticity, honesty, and transparency come in.
Our avocado oil supplier has a strict supplier approval and full
traceability that starts at the tree/grower and back to them with proof of protection against all potential risk of fraud.
Also, at receiving, the manufacturer completes a full IOC/AOCS standards test on all incoming oils to catch any form of commercial or accidental adulterations.
Our supplier is SQF certified and audited annually against requirements aiming to minimize the risk of food fraud and requires a documented vulnerability assessment and restricted requirements for supplier
approval.
What does Plastic Neutral mean?
This certification verifies that we remove, at minimum, from the environment, the same amount of plastic that we contribute. We strive to use recycled content in our packaging and are one of the only chip brands to care enough for our planet to remove plastic as we produce it. We are always looking for more sustainable and compostable packaging options, but at this time, most they are not feasible.
